Is a High Protein Diet sustainable for a long period of time?

A high protein diet is a hard diet to stick with for any real length of time. There are a few reasons why this is so. With so many high protein diets on the market today, little wonder so many people are confused with what is healthy and what isn’t.

While it’s true that eating highly refined carbohydrates like cookies, sweets, candy, chocolate, biscuits, cakes etc can cause us to stack on the weight….there is still no need to go onto a high protein diet. If you just stick to a healthy, balanced eating plan, you’ll be able to maintain this forever.

Another thing about high protein diets to be careful with is the fact that you can easily consume high amounts of saturated fats and cholesterol that can lead to heart disease.

A few of the downsides to eating a high protein diet are.

      1.      The kidneys may become overworked and may suffer damage in the process.

2.      Ketones (chemicals) are released into the bloodstream leading to problems like headaches, aches and pain, bad breath, constipation and tiredness.

3.      Any high protein diet that restricts carbohydrates in your diet is dangerous in the long term.

4.      The main fuel for the human body is carbohydrates. If you are on a very strict high protein diet, chances are you’ll be so lethargic you won’t even want to exercise so the whole merry-go-round starts again!

In conclusion. There must be a balance to maintain a healthy and most importantly happy lifestyle. A high protein diet does not allow for this, and sooner or later you’ll be dying to get your hands on some fresh bread, hot rice, and scrumptious pasta!
